Now that Helen had hidden herself away from the world, she finally had time to do things that weren't balancing a half dozen governments on her shoulders. Will was more than capable of handling the day-to-day running of the Sanctuary and it left her with more available time than she'd had in recent decades.

It was, in a word, unbearable.

Without something to fill up every waking moment of every day, Helen found herself dwelling on those she'd lost. This time of year, it fell toward Ashley, because her birthday would be in a few weeks and it was a day that always felt empty without her bounding around. Ashley was everything that Helen was not - impetuous, brave, brash and daring. Helen had ever been cautious about her life and had left nothing to chance. Ashley played everything for a lark.

So this particular evening, she wound up deep in the labs and saw only a few tufts of spiked brown hair bent over an unknown project. Nikola. Clearly that was the way to go, for distraction.

"Oi, what are you doing up so late, then? Burning the candle from both ends?" she teased, wanting to get a rise out of him.

Helen had spent the last several months going back and forth between the new facilities and the strange pocket universe she'd found with Nikola which had proven particularly enlightening. There were any number of infinite paths from that crossroads and it was something she had not been able to get a handle on scientifically just as yet.

Then again, science that was yet unexplained was merely magic, was it not? She had thought so as a child, until her father had taught her otherwise. All she had to do was keep exploring, keep pushing through each and every door until she found the key to cracking the mystery behind how it all worked. Of course, the legwork on this was exhausting but at least she had Nikola she could implore for help.

One of the doors she'd found in her wanderings had been one that was her own London back in the late 1800s. She was blonde there, as she'd discovered by gazing into a very dingy looking glass, but other than that, none of the rest of the Five seemed to be there. Her life was established, her home in the same place, just the people weren't the same. It was curious, to say the least, and she wondered what might happen if she pulled Nikola through the same door.

To that end, she'd gone back to the Nexus to find him, poking around until she found the library. A likely choice; Nikola had ever loved to read with a nice glass of wine.

"Nikola! I've a project for you, if you care to come with me. Hmm? I'll make it worth your while, I promise."

Helen had actually not been expecting any visitors and with Will out seeing patients and teaching classes, it was just she and Gregory tucked into the tidy penthouse for the time being. When she heard the bell ring, she imagined it was Will and buzzed him in without a thought, thinking that he must have forgotten something.

She opened the door, smile wide, only for it to fall a bit in confusion when she saw Nikola there. "Ah, Nikola. I wasn't expecting you." She shifted Gregory a bit and opened the door a bit wider to let him in.

"Do come in. Tea? I'm afraid I don't have any wine on hand."

Helen thought it was just as well that she'd found the bottle of Source Blood in the clinic instead of at home or some place even remotely public and she'd kept it in her own Vet's Office since then, not wanting anyone to stumble upon it. In theory, it should be rendered inert by the island's own special qualities but Helen couldn't be too careful with such a valuable, yet dangerous object.

She dashed off quick notes to both John and Nikola, requesting they meet her in the vet's office after the day was done and once Granby and Sam and all the rest had cleared out, Helen paced the floors and waited. Walking was easier on her back most of the time and, well, there was always the chance she might not get out of a chair if she got in it.

Once she heard the door swing in, she motioned them inside. "Come on, then, shut the door and lock it. I've got something important to discuss and I don't want eavesdroppers."

Ice cream had become Helen's one true joy since she couldn't drink and she couldn't have caffeine and she had a cone of honey-lavender from Del as she wandered back from the shop down to the beach. She wanted to sit and watch the waves for a little while even if it was dangerous beyond all reckoning to sit down with her burgeoning belly and expect to get back up again. Still, she was willing to risk it.

It was lovely to watch the waves roll in and Helen took her time with the ice cream, cursing a little as some plopped down on her chest and stained her shirt an interesting shade of purple. Really? Apparently she was meant to suffer every indignity with this pregnancy. She shifted to stand and found that she couldn't given the changes in her center of gravity and well. Wasn't this awkward?

Spotting a familiar face, she called out. "Nikola! Come here? Help me?"

Helen was, honestly, quite nervous about what she had to do but before she started showing and the island at large found out, she needed to tell John she was pregnant. It wouldn't be fair to John for him to find out through a third party and Helen had more respect for him and their burgeoning friendship to allow that to happen.

She still didn't want to go alone, though, and she thought Nikola the best choice to tag along. Nikola had known John just as long as she and, unlike Will, wasn't the baby's father. The last thing Helen wanted was any ill consequence on Will's part.

She met Nikola just outside his own hut to make the trek out to see John and, predictably, he was late.

"Nikola, come on."
