Carnival! (for Will)
While the island had changed for some reason or another, Helen wasn't particularly interested in exploring it. The constant din of carnival music made it nearly impossible to work and she was grateful her hut, at least, was some ways away from most of the civilization on the island. She had been trying to type up a state of the island address, or something to that effect, regarding her original campaign for Council and how she'd met her goals. She hadn't done as well as she hoped but at least Sam was working with Dr. McCoy and Alcuin with Nikola. She'd have to do better next term, if she were re-elected.
Normally not fond of sprawling out while she worked, Helen had sprawled out across the bed on her stomach, cursing lightly when one of her keys stuck on her laptop. "Bloody hell, Nikola, not only did you steal it, you had to go and spill wine all down in it too, didn't you?"
He was going to fix this if Helen had to stand on his neck until he thought it a good idea. She poked helplessly at the space bar, tacky with red wine, and sighed.

He bounced into the hut to find her working. Of course. Well, she could stop for a little while. "Okay, Maggie," he said cheerfully, reverting to his favorite nickname for her (that he didn't quite dare use too often since he'd first started, but he still loved doing it because it aggravated her). "Time to go have some fun." Will put his fingertips on the edge of the laptop, nudging it towards closed but not closing it all the way.

Still, she conceded and closed her laptop before standing up and brushing invisible lint off her t-shirt and jeans. "All right, you've convinced me."

He didn't push it too much because she gave in without too much protest, and he didn't want to make her change her mind, so after giving Roy a quick check (he's fine, snoozing away in his box) he took Magnus's hand and almost dragged her out the door.

It was silly, perhaps, but she kept her hand in his as they walked. Stupid and if anyone pointed it out she'd stop but for now, it felt nice.

He turned so that he was walking backwards in front of her, taking both her hands and grinning. "We'll have fun," he promised. "No worrying about anything." One of the things he hated about the island (granted, it was a relatively minor thing) was the lack of opportunities to take Magnus out on a real date. The options were pretty limited. So he couldn't help but jump on this chance.

"We used to have these in England, sort of. It was a bit different back when, of course, but there was an old wooden rollercoaster I rode once that rattled my bones and smelled like cheap beer. It was terrible and James kept making me ride it over and over and we laughed our heads off about it. That was, hmm. 1915, maybe?"

She laughed lightly. "James and cocaine was a little more frightening. Sherlock Holmes didn't have that habit on accident."

Granted, Roy would probably just climb on it and take it over when they got it home, but it was the thought that counted.

Probably the best course of action, considering.

"This is nice, even if it is impossibly dizzying after a while."

"I'll kiss you at the top and everything."

"I've been craving one of these for ages."

"I look a mess, don't I?"

"Fixed it for you."

Helen tugged him close to kiss again, just a quick one, before pulling away slightly. "I believe we had a date with a Ferris wheel, did we not? It'll be nice to see the island from way up high...then I had my eye on that drop tower over there."
Nothing like screaming bloody murder while having a good time.

"All right, walk me through it then. How does this baseball date go?"

"Do you ever think about what it would be like if we ever got to go home someday? If we'd change?"

It was just a book, and a kids' book at that, but he still wondered. Because it was the only explanation that made sense. Not total sense, but more than anything else had.

Helen reached for his hand. "I'll try very hard to remember this when we step through the wardrobe again, Will."

She was grasping at straws, yes, but the idea of not remembering this turn in their relationship was disturbing.
