happy thanksgiving

Thanksgiving was not a holiday that Helen really celebrated outside of food and drink with close friends and this year, she'd been with just Will when the labor pains had started up in earnest. She'd ignored them for a while, considering it was common enough this late in pregnancy to have some false labor but when the pain seemed to get sharp and real and the contractions worryingly close, she and Will made the trek to the clinic and luckily found Dr. McCoy, who was happy enough to deliver a baby (for a given description of happy, anyway).

It was only after the hard part was done (and they'd both slept a handful of hours, to boot) that she felt comfortable enough sending Will out to tell everyone the baby had come and felt up to entertaining company.

"I love it when you talk dirty to me," Nikola replied, grinning at Helen. His smirk all teeth as he looked wickedly at her at the prospect. "Of course I won't experiment on him."

It was hardly experimenting when he knew what he was doing.

He snorted and shook his head, immediately tossing it to get his hair out of his eyes, his hand rather occupied at that exact moment. He grinned.

"Oh, no," he said. "Aviators almost always have a healthy sense of their own worth. Especially the Captains. Captains being valuable, obviously."

"He's got some great parents and lots of people to look after him," Sam said with a nod. Helen and Will would be awesome parents, Sam had no doubt about that. The children on the island were happy, from what he could tell. They didn't know life any other way.

"Oh, certainly. I dated a pilot once. She was fiercely independent and the most stubborn woman I've ever known. I think I might have loved her," Helen said, a soft smile touching at her mouth before it faded again.

"I suppose it's similar enough to an aviator, in theory."

"I mean it, Nikola. No testing. No experiments. No modification of any sort. If you so much as lay a finger on that child without my express permission, I'm flaying you. I can likely make a very convincing argument to the Council why I shouldn't be punished severely for it," Helen reminded him.

"That's not even taking into account what John and Will might do to you."

"I pray Elua continues to shine such blessings on you and your husband." I would find no such solace in this place. I was not sure I even wanted it for any such affection, any love, would feel like a betrayal to my beloved back home. I loved and would love my odd Casseline until the death of my days, what could I possibly find to compete with that?

"Is there anything the two of you lack? Child's clothing, food for your home? I could arrange to have some food sent over so you did not have to make so many trips back."

"I'm not gonna intrude on a father teaching his kid how to play a great game," Danny promises, though he's beaming like an idiot at the thought of getting to possibly start up a little league. "Grace never really took to baseball. Now, football..." he says, ignoring the part where Rachel had been trying like hell to get her into tennis, of all things.

"Similar," said Granby, who'd had the whole notion of pilots explained to him by Julie in connection to her Jamie and her RAF. "But not quite. A dragon can be told but not exactly controlled. That's why pilots are so valuable - we're forbidden to put ourselves in direct danger for that very reason."

"That's good. You'll have to let me, you know, babysit or something." Since that'd probably the only experience Leah ever got with kids, until Seth had one, if he ever did. She damned sure wasn't gonna hang around to have play time with Sam and Emily's rugrats. No thanks. "I mean, when he's bigger and more substantial and less dependent on boobs, at least."

"Spoilsport," Nikola replied sulkily, stroking Gregory's hair and smiling fondly at im. "You make it sound like I don't know what I'm doing. Fine, fine, Gregory remains just as he is."

"Food would be wonderful, thank you. You've already done enough, Phedre, I couldn't put you out any more."

She had really been a wonderful friend and a kind, gentle presence during labor. Helen couldn't be more grateful.

"Football, then. You are completely in charge of it," Helen said, beaming bright. "He'll be the most well-rounded athlete the island's ever seen. Although, I do hope he'll have time for a few other pursuits, yes?"

"I'll see some meals are sent over. Things that will keep well enough. As I said, you and your husband have well enough to deal with." I was glad to do anything I could for the couple. For Helen who was so patient with me as I was learning medicine and helping as much as she could with Greg. I had been happy to be there to assist during her birth.

"Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't let him live without having a couple intellectual surprises up his sleeve," Danny promises with an easy grin, and considering the kid's parents, there's no way he won't be a genius. "He'll be taking over Council before you know it."

"This is entirely mother's bias but I think he'll be brilliant at anything, if he puts his mind to it. Every mother thinks that about her child, though, and it's been so long since I had a baby. I feel like it's the first time all over again."

In some ways it was, the differences in Ashley's rearing to how Gregory's would be, but in others, Helen hoped to drift into familiar habits once again.

"I'm glad you're getting the second chance," Danny says, as much as it pains him to say to someone else -- and to believe it, given that he's still filled with doubt after Esther and what she did to him. "You deserve it. You both do."
